When you live in my world, “here goes nothing” is often the start of… well, everything.
With that in mind, you probably won’t be totally shocked when I tell you the exciting news that WE’RE MOVING to Austin, Texas!!
We’re officially saying goodbye to San Francisco at the end of June after living in this beautiful city for two years. As our lives change, I’ll be sharing all sorts of updates with you – from what it was like to be in San Francisco, our journey to Texas, making the new space our home (home décor content coming at ya!), all the way to what we’re up to next!
And since we just found our new apartment, I’m going to start sharing now.
Our lease here in San Francisco ends in July which means we dove into the search as soon as possible. Taking into consideration the weird timing, a global pandemic, and just the sheer distance between us and our new home, the search was (admittedly!) quite a challenge.
We used some of our favorite sites like https://www.apartments.com/ and https://www.zillow.com/ to check for availability, but I was really concerned about the whole “sight unseen” aspect. I felt that photos wouldn’t do the apartment justice and I wouldn’t be able to get the vibe of the space at all.
This isn’t our first rodeo (yes, I say things like that now – we’re moving to TEXAS, ya’ll!!! EEE!!) when it comes to moving across the country. We moved from Florida to San Francisco two years ago, but at that time we miraculously managed to fit a day-of tour and found an apartment we both fell in love with. All 470 square feet of it!
If you’re planning to move and virtual apartment searching is required, here’s a few things we’ve learned:
We knew we wanted more space (shocking, I know 😅) and looked at houses as well as apartments. In the end, we opted for another apartment. It’s definitely sizing up from this one!
City girl or a country babe?
I’m definitely a little bit of both and so we wanted to get a feel of the community so we could really decide where we would want to be rooted. We prioritized safety, nearby amenities, and green space for Finley.
We were scouring pages on pages of apartments every day. But we kept our eye on the prize and skipped a LOT of headache by doing our research and picking a neighborhood right out of the gate. YouTube was actually a great resource for this.
After choosing a place, we worked closely with a leasing agent via email and phone. She patiently answered all of our questions and helped us see as much as we could. It was almost as if we were there in person which made us feel way more relaxed throughout the entire process.
As with anything, these reviews help to give you an idea of what to expect and maybe a few things to look out for. This could help you make your final decision.
This is ideal, but not always possible. The beauty of having people you know in the area is that they likely know you well enough to have an idea of what you’re looking for. Well, that, and of course: honest feedback about the place!
We’ve really loved our time in San Francisco, but at the end of the day, it’s just so expensive and we’re really far from family. So, onward!
We are so excited to experience everything that Austin has to offer. I can’t wait for a road trip from San Francisco to our new home. We’re going to take our time and enjoy the ride! I think our new home is the perfect mix for both of us and can confidently say, this will be my favorite place to decorate!
We’ll be sharing a sweet little tour of our empty apartment very soon but in the meantime…
